Northbridge sits immediately north of the Perth CBD, separated from it by the railway, and is part of the City of Perth. It was officially gazetted as a suburb in 1982, having previously been known as North of the Line. The area is built over freshwater swamps drained from the 1860s, and the gold boom of the 1890s left it with a stock of hotels including the 1896 Great Western, now the Brass Monkey.

Groundwater is still high, so drainage runs have little fall to work with and older pipe sitting in wet ground deteriorates faster.
