Redcliffe is a suburb about eight kilometres east of the Perth CBD in the City of Belmont, bounded by Great Eastern Highway, Tonkin Highway, Epsom Avenue and the Perth Airport grounds. It is a mix of residential, semi-industrial and retail, and was subdivided from a single property into small farms in 1897. Its name is generally attributed to the red clay deposits along the Swan River bank here, and that clay is the most practical thing to know before anyone quotes drainage work on a Redcliffe block.

• Red clay rather than sandClay holds water instead of letting it soak away, so a soak well sized as though this were the sandy plain will fill and stay full.
