Joondalup lies about twenty-six kilometres north of the Perth CBD and contains the central business district of the City of Joondalup, acting as the primary urban centre for Perth's outer northern suburbs. It was designated a sub-regional retail centre under the 1970 Corridor Plan for Perth, and grew into the city of the north from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. The Directions 2031 strategy names the Joondalup town centre as one of two Primary Centres for the Perth metropolitan area. The name comes from Lake Joondalup, a Noongar word first recorded in 1837.
