Claremont sits about nine kilometres west of the Perth CBD on the north bank of the Swan River, within the Town of Claremont. The railway from Perth to Fremantle reached it in 1881 and the station was renamed Claremont in 1883. Land speculators subdivided the area into blocks of varying sizes, and by about 1903 almost the entire suburb had been divided up. Lake Claremont, formerly Butler's Swamp, and the Claremont Showground both lie within its boundaries.

• Lake Claremont, formerly Butler's SwampThe lake was a wetland long before the suburb was built, and it keeps groundwater high in the streets around it. Soak wells on those blocks fill faster and clear more slowly over winter, so stormwater there has to be sized for the water table rather than to a standard detail.
• Almost fully subdivided by 1903The suburb was carved up early and built out before the Second World War, which puts the original water and sewer services at well over a century old. Galvanised supply and earthenware sewer are the norm, and because they went in within a couple of decades they are failing across neighbouring streets at the same time.
• Blocks subdivided into widely varying sizesSpeculators cut Claremont into lots of very different sizes, so a large home and a small cottage can sit in the same street. The service runs, pipe sizes and drainage on those two properties are not comparable, and quoting one from the other gets it wrong.
• The Claremont Quarter and Bay View Terrace shopsA significant retail and hospitality area runs along Stirling Highway and Bay View Terrace. Those kitchens and public amenities need grease traps serviced and floor wastes kept clear, and none of it can happen while they are trading.
