Mount Claremont, previously known as Graylands, lies about nine kilometres west of the Perth CBD, split between the City of Nedlands and the Town of Cambridge. Its residential area is made up of four estates: Old Mount Claremont, mostly built in the 1940s and 1950s; St Peters Square, a higher density townhouse development; St Johns Wood, a newer estate of larger blocks; and Zamia Gardens, the newest and still under construction. The suburb also holds the Western Australian Institute of Sport, the Perth High Performance Centre, Graylands Hospital and John XXIII College.

• Four estates built decades apartOld Mount Claremont dates from the 1940s and 1950s while Zamia Gardens is still being built, so the water and sewer services under one estate can be sixty years older than the next. We establish which estate a property sits in before quoting, because the same symptom has very different causes across them.
• Original 1940s and 1950s housingThe oldest estate still runs a great deal of its original pipework. Galvanised supply corrodes internally until pressure falls off, and the earthenware sewer joints are where roots get in. Both are at the end of their life together across those streets.

Those are serviced outside training and teaching hours rather than during them.
